About us

A Melbourne laneway bar for parties, screenings and creative events

Bring your birthday party, work function, film premiere or creative event to Theory Bar in Melbourne’s CBD. We are a laneway arts and events bar with an emphasis on comedy and film, run by the people behind The Improv Conspiracy Theatre. Our venue has hosted comedy and trivia nights, fashion shows, film and webseries premieres, book and product launches, industry gatherings and birthdays.

Choose our front bar, rear function and screening room, or discuss a full-venue booking. Each interior space has its own Void sound system and feature projection wall. The areas can be partitioned and booked separately, or combined for a larger event. Our licence allows up to 150 people on the premises; the right attendance for your event depends on its seating and setup.

The rear function room suits up to 40 guests. You can use its projector for a screening, arrange private karaoke or create a dedicated party area. Depending on your booking, you can control the room’s lighting, projection and music, choose from seating and table options, decorate the space and arrange a custom cocktail special. You may bring your own food or catering.

For an event with a presentation or entertainment component, we also offer the front-bar stage, projection screen and seating area. In a part-venue booking, general trade may continue in other areas, so discuss the privacy and access arrangements with us. A full-venue hire gives you a different level of control and should be planned directly with our team.

Our drinks selection includes beers, wines and cocktails. We also host regular arts and comedy residencies and one-off events. If you are planning a louder DJ or music night, please discuss it with us first: we accept only events that align with our venue’s brand. For a few tables or a shorter performance, ask us about suitable booking options.

Theory Bar is a fun little spot in Melbourne, I visited to watch a they/them comedy show, which made for a different kind of night out. The venue has a relaxed laneway bar feel and is set up for more than just drinks. I like that it brings together comedy, arts and other events in one place. It feels like the sort of venue where you can discover something a little different from the usual night out. Having a comedy show there gave me a reason to check it out. The negative was we were only given 1 bottle of wine when 2 were purchased. Theory Bar is run by the team behind The Improv Conspiracy Theatre and regularly hosts comedy and other creative events. The space includes a front bar as well as a smaller rear screening room, so there is more to it than you might expect from the outside. The they/them comedy show was the main reason for my visit, and it was nice to have an event to focus on rather than just going out for drinks.

Melbourne CBD laneway bar with no pretence of, well, anything. Just a bunch of normals, randos, and misfits thrown in together for a night. We were there for drag karaoke, we should have gone straight to the hotel as we had a wedding the next day, but I stayed until close (1:30). SO much fun, such GREAT people. Honestly, the best night out I've had in years.

Caught the end of the Monthly Queer Comedy Show the other week and had some cocktails. Lovely atmosphere and vibe, very cosy. I would frequent this place if I was a local

Exceptional bar, incredible staff, perfect vibes every night i've gone. Heaps of awesome events on all the time. One of the most amazing queer spaces in all of Melbourne, highly recommended.
