Italian dining and intimate events beneath the State Library
Our function options can be tailored around your gathering, from a shared meal with colleagues to an engagement celebration, private dinner or workshop. We also welcome library events, Wheeler Centre workshops and university luncheons. Discuss your guest numbers, seating needs and preferred atmosphere with us so we can agree the areas and arrangements for your booking.
For weddings, we offer indoor and outdoor spaces for your ceremony and intimate celebration. Our setting underneath the library gives your occasion a distinctive location in the city, with food, drinks and service planned around your day.
Our food centres on handmade Italian cooking. The menu includes handmade pasta, our Thousand Layer Lasagne, slow-cooked lamb shoulder and classic tiramisù, with a wine list that leans towards Italy and Victoria. Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free diners can discuss available choices with our team. Shared dining menus are available, with participation and group conditions depending on the selected menu.
We provide the catering for functions and do not permit outside food, apart from celebration cakes. Decorations and performances need management approval, and any entertainment arrangements should be agreed in writing before your event. Guests under eighteen must attend with a parent or legal guardian and remain supervised.
You will find us beneath the Wheeler Centre entrance in central Melbourne. If you need assistance with access, please contact us before visiting so a member of our team can meet you and escort you into the venue. We are closed on public holidays.

The atmosphere hums with the chatter and electricity of a fine dining experience. I treated my partner to drinks, antipasti and pasta and was served by the incredible Inka. She was an incredibly attentive host, ensuring that our glasses never emptied, and that our food was served with precise timing. It was genuinely a joy to indulge in good food, cocktails and good conversation. The servers really ensured that we had the best experience, and unfortunately I was unable to get a picture, but my plate was empty.

The kitchen team demonstrates a masterful understanding of flavors, delivering dishes that are perfectly seasoned, wonderfully balanced, and incredibly memorable. The ingredients are clearly fresh and top-tier, resulting in a sensational meal from the very first bite to the last. The front-of-house staff mirrors this excellence with their polite, professional, and welcoming demeanor. They were highly attentive to our table and made the evening feel extra special. Combined with the elegant yet comfortable atmosphere, it makes for a fantastic night out. I will be praising this establishment to anyone who will listen!
The Moat is such a gorgeous little find in the heart of Melbourne! ❤️ Tucked beneath the State Library, it has that cosy, intimate atmosphere that makes you feel like you’ve escaped the city for a little European getaway. Hubby and I loved the vibe - perfect for a date night, a glass of wine and a lovely meal. There’s something really special about the setting, and you can feel a lot of care has gone into creating the experience. If you’re looking for somewhere a little different for dinner in Melbourne, definitely add The Moat to your list. Vibey Italian, a beautiful atmosphere and a hidden-gem feel.
