About us

Historic 1831 convict-built stone homestead with gardens, ceremony spaces and event facilities for up to 90 guests

Tanilba House is a heritage-listed stone homestead built in 1831 by convicts, located on the Tilligerry Peninsula in Port Stephens overlooking the bay. The estate encompasses three acres of mature, landscaped gardens featuring thousands of fairy lights, a 30-metre wisteria-covered pergola from the 1920s with stone pillars, and a distinctive ceremony area beneath two 160-year-old fig trees that form a natural cathedral canopy.

The venue offers multiple indoor and outdoor event spaces. The all-weather conservatory overlooks fields and bay views, while the surrounding colonial verandahs and garden areas provide flexible ceremony and reception settings. The property includes a stone convict-built gaol, heritage temple, and extensive vintage props including stone chairs, wishing chair, wine barrels and cable reels for styling.

Tanilba House accommodates weddings, high teas, corporate functions, milestone celebrations and group events for up to 90 people. The venue provides catering options, a licensed bar with rustic bar made from 150-year-old wood, sound system, rustic dancefloor and photobooth facilities. On-site accommodation is available in the refurbished two-bedroom maids quarters. Parking is provided on the property.

We could not have been happier with our wedding at Tanilba House. Dee and Glenn are exceptional hosts - proactive, friendly, professional and confidence inspiring. The venue itself is a stunning mix of outdoor spaces and unlike any of the other places we considered. The food was excellent, our guest had a ball, and we wouldn’t ask for anything to have gone differently. We are immensely grateful to Dee and Glenn, and feel so privileged to have been able to celebrate our wedding at Tanilba House.

We honestly couldn’t have asked for a more perfect venue for our wedding. Tanilba Bay House has the most incredible old-timey, fantasy-like atmosphere, which was exactly the feeling I had dreamed of for our wedding. The venue itself is so beautiful and unique, and it created the most magical backdrop for our day. John and Dee, the owners, were absolutely lovely from start to finish. They were so accommodating and genuinely willing to work with us to bring our dream wedding to life. Their communication was fantastic, and they made the whole process feel incredibly easy and stress-free. The food deserves a special mention too because it was AMAZING! It wasn’t the usual boring wedding menu where you’re choosing between chicken or fish. There were so many delicious and interesting options, and our guests loved it. For everything that is included, the price is honestly incredible, especially with things like the food and celebrant included. It made planning our wedding so much simpler and gave us amazing value without compromising on the experience. We are so grateful to John and Dee for helping make our wedding day everything we had hoped for. All of our guests were blown away and still havent stoped complimenting us over our wedding. If you’re looking for a venue that feels unique, magical, personal and genuinely cares about making your day special, we couldn’t recommend Tanilba Bay House enough. P.S If you time it right, have the wisteria blooming it adds that extra ambience.

What a pleasurable experience it was working with Dee and Glenn from Tanilba House for our wedding. The Garden Party Package was perfect for what we were after. Tanilba House was a spectacular location for our wedding photos. Thank you both for all of your hard work.
